The GMB designation courses are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals. Check out the HBAA Calendar for a course near you!

Eligibility Requirements:
Earn your CGB, CGR or CGA designation and
possess five (5) years building industry experience.
OR
Complete three (3) CGB approved courses not previously used for
designation and possess 10 years building industry experience

Curriculum & Other Requirements:
Be a "Builder" according to the following criteria: primary executive/owner of a company, superintendent or lead carpenter, or construction executive personnel/employee* that has built a minimum of 1 dwelling in the past 24 months.
AND
Complete five (5) courses from the list of approved GMB courses
OR
Complete four (4) courses from the list of approved GMB courses and two (2) courses from the CGB approved course list that were not used to obtain a previous designation.

Submit the following documentation with your application:

  1. Proof of liability insurance & workers compensation insurance for yourself or be an employee* of a company that holds both. (Where required by local jurisdiction)
  2. Proof of a residential builder’s or contractor’s license, certificate, or registration for the state in which you do business for yourself or be an employee* of a company that holds a license, certificate, or registration. (Where required by local jurisdiction)
  3. A letter of sponsorship from the owner/executive stipulating your position within the company as either superintendent, lead contractor or construction executive is required, if you are not the owner of the company
  4. Submit a signed copy of the Code of Ethics Pledge


*Employee in an executive or management position with discretionary authority over building and construction matters, excluding office management and administrative personnel such as office manager or accountant.

Financial Management
Land Acquisition and Development Finance
Negotiating Skills
Profitable Business through Quality Practices
Risk Management and Insurance for Building Professionals

Note: Candidates may substitute 2 CGB approved courses for any 1 GMB approved course provided those courses were not used to obtain their original CGA, CGB or CGR designation.

Graduation Fees:

Continuing Education (CE) Requirements:
Complete 12 hours of CE every 3 years. A minimum of 6 hours should be a University of Housing course or participation in approved NAHB-related activities. Another 6 hours (maximum) is additional building-industry related education. Designees are required to submit proof of attendance for each event or activity (copy of registration confirmation, show badge, course certificate, etc.) with their CE form. If a building designation was achieved a copy of the certificate should be attached. Check out HBAA's Builder University for online CE credits available to you 24/7!

NAHB Education and Activities (minimum 6 required hours). Approved education & activities listed below:
Complete an NAHB University of Housing course (in regular classroom format)
Teach an NAHB University of Housing course
Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for an NAHB University of Housing course
Be an active member in a Builder or Remodeler 20 Club

AND

Building Industry-related Education (maximum 6 hours). Approved education & activities listed below:
Attend a national, regional or state trade show.
Attend an educational symposium or event, NAHB board meeting or chair an NAHB national committee.
Earn a building industry related professional designation.
Complete a business management-related or building industry related course or seminar conducted by a college, university or technical school.
Manufacturer Product Training - These include sponsored education on business or installation techniques, facility tours, fabrication process demonstrations or product demonstrations.
