YouthBuild Montgomery Construction Site Trainer
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This is responsible work teaching YouthBuild program participants the skills necessary to construct a house or apartment building. Provides supportive guidance and encourages development of the trainees' personal and leadership skills.
REPORTS TO: YouthBuild Construction Manager
SUPERVISES: YouthBuild program participants at the construction training site. Does not supervise employees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: An employee in this position may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks that an employee may be expected to perform.
1. Teaches construction skills including demolition, framing, interior work, carpentry, etc., and the appropriate use of equipment and tools through demonstrations, modeling skills and supervising.
2. Teaches safe procedures for use and handling of equipment, tools and clean up of the construction site through demonstrations, modeling appropriate procedures and supervision.
3. Teaches appropriate ways to handle technical construction problems arising at the building site through demonstrations, modeling skills and supervision.
4. Keeps Project Director, Construction Manager, and other staff informed about issues and needs of the trainees; participates in regular trainee team reviews.
5. Assists in personal and vocational counseling and the development of trainees' leadership skills in conjunction with other YouthBuild staff.
6. Provides informal crisis intervention, seeks consultation, and makes referrals for youth behavior issues.
7. Implements attendance policies and procedures consistently at the site.
8. Works as a member of the total staff team, integrating site learning with academic learning as appropriate.
9. Attends meetings, trainings, and conferences as required.
10. Prepare academic/construction training facility for use.
11. Additional duties as are from time to time assigned by YouthBuild Project Director.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY
Must have thorough knowledge of construction codes, materials, and tools, and a considerable knowledge of OSHA requirements. Journeyman level of building trades experience with the ability to supervise crews and assess requirements. Must be able to effectively communicate with young people who have not completed high school, and be committed to helping them succeed in reorienting their lives and in building their leadership skills. Must have a valid Alabama driver's license.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High School diploma or equivalent. Minimum of five years of experience in all phases of residential construction with at least one year in a supervisory capacity. Must have some experience training others in the trades; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

YouthBuild Montgomery Construction Manager/Occupational Training Instructor/Site Trainer
instruction for YouthBuild Montgomery program participants using an approved vocational curriculum and developing supporting training materials as needed; coordinating the planning and integration of the curriculum between basic skill and construction while encouraging development of the trainees’ personal and leadership skills.
REPORTS TO: YouthBuild Project Director
SUPERVISES: Supervises the Construction Site Trainer
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: An employee in this position may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks that an employee may be expected to perform.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Instruct program participants using a combination of approved curriculum and instructor-developed plans for implementation.
- In collaboration with the academic instructor and worksite instructors, provide vocational education classes which teach construction related skills, in all related construction components. Appropriate ways to handle technical construction problems that arise at the building site.
- Monitor and coach trainees.
- Observe and evaluate trainees at the worksite and provide hands-on assistance in training at the worksite.
- Coordinate testing and evaluation of student skills with the site trainers and provide regular assessment of student performance.
- Document student skill attainment, in coordination with the academic instructor and worksite instructors.
- Keep counselor and other staff informed about issues and needs of the trainees and participate in regular team reviews of student progress.
- Assist in informal personal and vocational counseling and development of trainees’ leadership skills in conjunction with other Youthbuild staff.
- Provide informal crisis intervention.
- Perform various administrative and reporting functions, as required.
- Coordinate with the City in preparation of the academic/construction training facility located onsite.
- Prepare academic/construction training facility for use.
- Coordinate with Builder/Construction Company in the building of the designated house for this project.
- Other duties as assigned by YouthBuild Project Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
2. Two years experience teaching vocational education to adults or young adults.
3. Experience in creative curriculum planning and development.
4. At least five years related construction/trades experience.
5. Must have deep respect for the ideas and intelligence of young adults.
6. Strong commitment to helping young people succeed in an innovative training program, to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and enable them to make a difference in their communities.
7.. Ability to relate sensitively to multi-racial and multi-cultural groups of young people.
8. Excellent oral, written communication, and coaching skills.
9. Ability to team teach and work as part of team.
